In the pursuit of cost effective lighting solutions, I recently got my hands on the Flashpoint 180 Monolight from Adorama.  This lightweight kit is deigned to be used in just about anywhere, and the included carrying case makes it easy to take from location to location.

The Flashpoint 180 Monolight is a 180 watt LED daylight balanced, and battery powered light.  The light uses two readily available NP-F960 batteries for power which provide up to 700 flashes on a charge full, according to Adorama. I managed to get 678 out of my unit. That is pretty respectable, and it did not fail me once during operation. It also has input for DC power, although I didn’t seem to need it.

Included in the Box

  • Flashpoint Mono Light w/ Reflector
  • Batteries & Charger
  • Small Umbrella
  • Cords
  • Carrying Bag -Handle

While shooting with the Flashpoint 180 Monolight, I did actually keep it full powered, even though it can be adjusted by 5 stops via the 1/16 switch on the back of light. I just find that this is a relatively low powered light source. However the ability to stop down is a great feature especially when working with my Canon 5D MKIII.

The small umbrella that comes with the kit is works well. However, I did find it a little fragile. You must be careful with it, other wise it could possibly break. But at this price point including an small umbrella is a great feature.

The Reflector has a good build quality, and does feel a little substantial in your hands. It easily mounts on to light, without any need to jiggle or stress. I did notice the powder coat finish is easily scratched. However, that’s really cosmetic, and who does not have gear scratched, and worn from location shooting.

Final Thoughts

The Flashpoint line continues to amaze me with their features and build quality at a really low price. The features that impress me most, is its ability to begin shooting with right out of the box. This really has is thank to the fact the kit so well put together. The kit really includes everything from umbrella, to batteries, charger, and carrying bag. The Flashpoint 180 Monolight can be had at MRSP $250 from Adorama, however it is on sale right now for $200.
