Exploring the vastness of Canada can be very exciting. There are many beautiful places to see, and wonderful roads to explore. A road trip in Canada can be very fulfilling, whether you are simply heading up to the cottage or going just heading out to find new places to explore. These epic journeys you take with friends and family and build a closer bond, so picking the right vehicle for the job is important. That’s where the Volkswagen Touareg TDI enters the picture.
The Touareg TDI is the largest SUV platform in the Volkswagen brand, and shares its underpinnings with the Porsche Cayenne. Under the hood you will find a 3.0 TDI V6 diesel engine matted to a 7 speed DSG transmission. The engine is capable of putting out 240 bhp and a whopping 406 pound feet of torque. Perfect for towing your boat up to the cottage or your sports car to a track day.
In side the Volkswagen Touareg TDI it’s typical VW quality trim and finishes with soft touch materials, leathers seats, and excellent driving position. Volkswagen provides you with memory seats for people who need to share the driving.
The cabin feels incredibly spacious, with wonderful sunlight beaming in from the panoramic sunroof. You will never get the feeling of being in a cramped smaller SUV. It feels a little like home. All controls are clear and precise in their functionality. I found the touchscreen navigation a little slow and laggy, but its a nice large screen so it easy to view maps.
Seats are firm and therefore comfortable for the long hauls. The rear bench is roomy enough for three adults, and capable of fitting my 3 child seats. The trunk is wonderfully large, perfect for avid golfers or anyone in production would appreciate the space.
On the road the Volkswagen Touareg TDI is incredibly comfortable. The ride is very smooth, and you can hardly hear the diesel engine at all. Step on the gas and you can feel all 406 pound feet of torque rocket you forward as the AWD hunkers down for added grip. It leaps forward from about 1700 rpm and feels like a large animal stalking its prey. It reminded me of my own Golf R launching. A very rewarding experience for a large vehicle. All that Torque means you have plenty of towing power and the ability to overtake others with very little drama.
Stopping the Touareg TDI are large brakes that feel firm and do the job well. I never felt that this large SUV would not stop in time. Actually, it was stopping shorter than I expected from my experience with other larger SUVs and crossovers. It gives you full confidence that you will be able to stop in case of an emergency.
When the road changes from pavement to gravel to mud the Touareg TDI is up to the challenge. Simply, reach down to the controls and and change the setting from “On Road” to “Off Road.” This tells the on board computer to adjusting the vehicles suspension settings, throttle response, brakes , and the AWD drive system to provide you with better control and handling. I was amazed at how easily it was able to traverse very small tight gravel and dirt trails-areas I would dare not take my Golf R as it was simply much too steep of an incline.
Fuel economy is where the Touareg TDI shines. I was able to get an 8.9L per 100km with mixed driving across city traffic, highways speeds, and a little offroading. I was able to get even better mileage when participated in the Cross Canada Tour with Volkswagen Canada last year.
A power liftgate is available for people who opt for the highline model. This comes is really handy for when you hands are full of groceries, lumber or even cameras in my case. This is just one of those features I always wondered what is the point, until you use it everyday and then realize how useful it really is.
The Volkswagen Touareg TDI is a SUV perfectly suited for drive that is need of a vehicle capable of towing, has a large trunk space and is willing to explore Canada’s wilderness. All while sitting in a luxurious spacious cabin. They say ignorance is bliss, and I can assure you I did not realize how much fun and enjoyment I was going to get out of the Touareg TDI. But it’s definitely a vehicle I will surely miss.
I would like to thank Volkswagen Canada for providing me with the opportunity to review the Touareg TDI.
