Over the years I have had several different still cameras, ranging from the Nikon Coolpix, Nikon D50, Nikon D90, and now the Canon 5D MKII and Canon 7D. The same can be said about my affection to film and video cameras that have ranged from the 16mm Bolex, to Panasonic ENG, Sony Z1U, and Sony EX1. Normally I would have to lug around both stills and video camera in order to get the best of both worlds. However, this is no longer the case. Introducing my favorite of technology gear the Canon 7D.
The Canon 7D is by far my favorite piece of gear right now. Not only does it shoot outstanding photos with it’s 18.0 Megapixels, but it also takes wonderful full 1080p HD video. The 7D also captures Full HD video at 30p (29.97 fps), 24p (23.976 fps) and 25p with an array of manual controls, including manual exposure during movie shooting and ISO speed selection. The Canon 7D features a magnesium alloy body that is dust- and weather-resistant . This makes it ideal for shooting time-lapse outside for long periods.
The Canon 7D is a versatile piece of technology, with its interchangeable lens and shallow depth of field, it truly has become one of favorite pieces of gear. Also because of its small compact size it is easy to travel with and quickly set up for interviews. Back in Nov 2010, I had the opportunity to interview legendary editor Walter Murch. With the very limited time we were given, both set -up and tear down of the scene was done in under 5 mins. You can check out that interview here.
While on vacation, or out with the family, the 7D continues to favorite of mine. Sure I do have smaller point and shoot cameras, or even my iPhone to take quick on offs. But the 7D allows me to document the full day with either my kids, by taking photos or video without having to worry about shutter delay or loosing daylight.
The Canon 7D is my favorite piece of gear I have owned to date. (until a newer one comes).
People have different choses when it comes to technology, what is your favorite piece of gear and why?

Great post!
Hi…!!!
I like your site…!!!
Sorry for my english but i’m french.
I just want to ask you something:
you say than the 7d is your favorite one but what about your 5d mark 2.
I got a 7d but everyone around me want i sell it for a 5d mark 2.
thanks for your advices
Well, I have both 5D and 7D. I prefer my 7D simply based on the camera’s ergonomics. Also the Camera’s sensor is closer to that of 35mm film.
In the end you go with what feels right within your budget. They are both outstanding cameras.
Hi franky,
I also had to make a choise between that two cameras and it seemed to be a hard one, but that was only until I realized there is no build in flash on the MKII!!
So I’m no way ready to carry an extra huge flash all the time together with the camera just for the case it’s needed. I mean, good to have one, but also a build in flash just should not be missing!!!
So I walked away pretty quick from the MKII even if it has that nice full frame sensor.
With the 7d you can just grab it and go, and dont need to worry about what to do without a flash when the evening hour gets close ;)
It is a nice feature to have ” just in case”. However I really don’t like the on board flash. I normally carry faster lenses in order to compensate for the dimming light.
Such as the 50mm f/1.2. It helps keeps my images more natural looking. If it gets too dark then I switch to the 5DMKII, the larger sensor is simply or more sensitive in really low light.
It’s laborious to search out educated individuals on this subject, however you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks
